What is a North Star for an organisation?

Definitie

The North Star is an organisation's overarching future ambition — a clear and inspiring picture of what the organisation wants to be and achieve in the next 12 to 18 months.

In het kort

The North Star is your organisation's future ambition — concrete enough to serve as a compass, inspiring enough to give direction. A good North Star fits in one sentence and is understandable to everyone. It is revised every 12–24 months when the ambition is realised or the market fundamentally changes.

North Star vs. mission vs. vision

A mission describes why an organisation exists (timeless). A vision describes the ideal world it wants to create (often abstract). The North Star is more concrete: it is a specific future point that should be reachable within the next 12–18 months.

Characteristics of a good North Star

The North Star is step 1 of the AI workshop. The AI facilitator asks: 'What kind of organisation do you want to be in 12–18 months?' Your answer becomes the compass for all subsequent steps — from business objectives to AI agent design and ERP configuration.

Frequently asked questions

What is a North Star Metric?
In product management, the North Star Metric is a single KPI that best summarises a product's success (e.g. 'weekly active users'). In organisational design, the North Star is broader: it is the qualitative ambition of the entire business.
How do I formulate a North Star?
Start with: if everything goes well, what will be different in our business in 18 months? Formulate that as a positive, concrete statement in the present tense (as if it has already happened). Example: 'We are the fastest order processor in our sector with an error rate below 0.5%'.
How often does a North Star change?
Typically every 12–24 months, when the previous ambition has been realised or the market changes significantly. A North Star that changes every quarter is counterproductive.
Can an organisation have multiple North Stars?
No. Multiple North Stars dilute strategic focus. If your organisation wants to go in multiple directions, translate that into 3–5 Business Objectives under one overarching North Star.
How does a North Star differ from a mission?
A mission is timeless and describes the reason for existence ('why we exist'). The North Star is time-bound (12–18 months) and describes the desired future position. The mission rarely changes; the North Star every 1–2 years.
What if the team disagrees on the North Star?
That is valuable information. Use the difference of opinion as input for the workshop session: which ambition unites the team? A North Star that is not embraced is counterproductive. Invest time in alignment before the next steps.
